Schluter DITRA is the uncoupling membrane that breaks that connection: a polyethylene matting with a grid of dovetailed square cavities and an anchoring fleece laminated to the underside, so thin-set keys mechanically into both the substrate below and the cavities above. Those cutback cavities fill with mortar to form column-like structures that carry heavy loads straight through to the substrate, while the grid absorbs in-plane movement that would otherwise crack tile and grout. At a nominal 1\/8 inch it does four jobs at once — uncoupling, waterproofing, vapor management, and load distribution — over concrete, plywood, OSB, gypsum, existing vinyl, and radiant heated floors, with tile permitted over single-layer plywood on joists spaced up to 19.2 inches. cUPC listed, ICC-ES evaluated under ESR-2467, and compliant with ANSI A118.10.
