Flooring calculator

This flooring calculator is a coverage estimator that converts room dimensions into total square footage, accounts for cut waste, and returns the number of boxes to order. It works for SPC vinyl flooring, LVP, laminate, and tile — anything sold by per-box coverage. Free to use, no account needed.

Your rooms

Split L-shaped rooms into rectangles and enter each as its own area. Include closets and hallways getting the same flooring. Measurements in decimal — 6 inches is 0.5 ft.

Covers cuts at walls, doorways, and mistakes. 10% is the standard for straight-lay plank.
Listed in the spec table on every GDBS flooring product page. SPC vinyl plank typically runs 18–24 sqft per box.

How the math works

Flooring coverage is total floor area plus a waste factor, rounded up to full boxes. The calculator sums each area's length × width, adds the waste percentage you select, then divides by the per-box coverage from your product's spec table and rounds up — flooring is sold by the full box, not the plank.

The waste factor is not optional. Every room needs end-of-row cuts, doorway cuts, and cuts around vents and jambs. Straight-lay plank in a rectangular room needs 10%. Diagonal or herringbone layouts, and rooms with many corners, need 15%. Ordering exact area is the most common way a flooring job stalls mid-install.

Keep at least one unopened box after the job. Boxes from the same order share a dye lot; a repair board bought a year later may not match.

Flooring calculator FAQ

How much extra flooring should I order?
Add 10% to your measured floor area for standard straight-lay plank. Use 15% for diagonal or herringbone layouts, or rooms with many corners and doorways. The extra covers end-of-row cuts, cuts around vents and jambs, and mistakes. Flooring is sold by the full box, so the calculator rounds up automatically.
How many square feet are in a box of flooring?
It varies by product and plank size. SPC vinyl plank typically covers 18–24 sqft per box; laminate and hardwood ranges are similar. The exact per-box coverage is listed in the spec table on every GDBS flooring product page — use that number, not an average.
Should I round up to full boxes?
Yes. Flooring is sold by the box, and the calculator always rounds up. Keep at least one unopened box after installation: boxes from the same order share a dye lot, and a replacement plank bought later may not match in colour or texture.
Does this calculator work for tile or laminate?
Yes. The math — floor area plus a waste factor, divided by per-box coverage — is the same for SPC vinyl flooring, LVP, laminate, hardwood, and tile. For tile laid diagonally, use the 15% waste factor. Enter the per-box or per-case coverage from the product you are pricing.
How do I measure an L-shaped room?
Split it into rectangles. Measure each rectangle's length and width, enter each as its own area in the calculator, and the totals are summed for you. Add closets and hallways that get the same flooring as separate areas — they are the most commonly forgotten square footage.
