Tile calculator

This tile calculator is a coverage estimator that converts wall or floor dimensions into total square footage, adds a cut-waste factor, and returns the number of cases to order. It works for porcelain, ceramic, and stone tile sold by per-case coverage.

Your areas

Split L-shaped floors into rectangles and enter each as its own area. Enter each wall or backsplash as its own area using its width and height. Measurements in decimal — 6 inches is 0.5 ft.

Covers cuts at walls and edges. Use 15% for diagonal, herringbone, or large-format tile.
Listed on the tile's product page. Compute it yourself as tile area × pieces per case.
CAD. For a materials estimate only — delivery not included.

How the math works

Tile coverage is total surface area plus a waste factor, rounded up to full cases. The calculator sums each area's length × width, adds the waste percentage you select, then divides by the per-case coverage from your tile's product page and rounds up — tile is sold by the case, not the piece.

Diagonal, herringbone, and large-format layouts need the 15% waste factor. Angled patterns generate more offcuts at every wall and edge than a straight grid lay, and large-format tile — 12"×24" and up — wastes more material with every broken or cut piece.

Grout, thinset, and spacers are not included in the estimate. Keep a few spare tiles from the same batch after the job: glaze and shade vary between production runs, so a replacement bought later may not match.

Tile calculator FAQ

How much extra tile should I order?
Add 10% to the measured area for a straight grid layout. Use 15% for diagonal or herringbone patterns, and for large-format tile (12"×24" and up), where each cut or broken piece wastes more material. Tile is sold by the case, so the calculator rounds up to full cases automatically.
How do I find the coverage per case?
It's listed in the spec table on every GDBS tile product page. If you only know the tile size, multiply one tile's area by the pieces per case: a case of ten 12"×12" tiles covers 10 sqft.
Should I keep leftover tile?
Yes. Keep at least a few spare tiles from the same order. Glaze colour and shade vary between production batches, so a replacement tile bought later may not match. Spares from the original batch make future repairs invisible.
Does this include grout and thinset?
No. The estimate covers tile only. Grout and thinset quantities depend on tile size, joint width, and trowel notch, which this calculator doesn't model. Both are listed on the product pages of GDBS setting materials.
Does the calculator work for wall tile?
Yes. Enter each wall as its own area using its width and height. The area-plus-waste math is identical for floors, walls, and backsplashes.
