The Layer That Stops Tile From Cracking

Tile cracks because the substrate underneath it moves and the tile does not — a slab cures and shrinks, a plywood floor flexes, and the grout lines telegraph every bit of it. Schluter DITRA is the uncoupling membrane that breaks that connection: a polyethylene matting with a grid of dovetailed square cavities and an anchoring fleece laminated to the underside, so thin-set keys mechanically into both the substrate below and the cavities above. Those cutback cavities fill with mortar to form column-like structures that carry heavy loads straight through to the substrate, while the grid absorbs in-plane movement that would otherwise crack tile and grout. At a nominal 1/8 inch it does four jobs at once — uncoupling, waterproofing, vapor management, and load distribution — over concrete, plywood, OSB, gypsum, existing vinyl, and radiant heated floors, with tile permitted over single-layer plywood on joists spaced up to 19.2 inches. cUPC listed, ICC-ES evaluated under ESR-2467, and compliant with ANSI A118.10. Interior use, dry or wet areas. Genuine Schluter, stocked at our Scarborough counter for will-call or GTA delivery.

Features
  • Four functions in one layer — uncoupling, waterproofing, vapor management, and load distribution
  • Dovetailed square cavities — thin-set locks into the cutback grid, forming column-like mortar structures that carry load
  • Anchoring fleece underside — embeds in thin-set for a mechanical bond to the substrate
  • 1/8 inch (3 mm) nominal thickness — keeps tile assembly low and minimizes transitions to adjacent flooring
  • Neutralizes in-plane movement — the uncoupling layer that stops substrate movement from cracking tile and grout
  • Bonds over almost anything — concrete, plywood, OSB, gypsum, existing vinyl, and radiant heated floors
  • Tile over single-layer plywood or OSB on joists spaced up to 19.2 in
  • cUPC listed and ICC-ES evaluated (ESR-2467) — code-compliant on residential and commercial tile work
